Introduction
Pienza, located in the Siena Province of the Tuscany region in central Italy, is a town with a long history and is adjacent to Montalcino. During the Renaissance period, Pope Pius II founded this ideal small town to renovate his poor homeland and escape the summer heat. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Pienza's buildings are Gothic and influenced by Germanic style. The main square of the town is Piazza Pio II, which has many important buildings from the 15th century. These include a church built between 1459-1462, the Piccolomini Palace, the Bishop's Palace, and the Town Hall with a jagged tower (built in 1462).
