Introduction

Fra Bevignate from Perugia designed the square, which was built by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano father and son between 1275 and 1278. The edges of the square are decorated with shallow relief sculptures that tell stories from the Old Testament, the founding of Rome, and the symbols of Perugia's free art and city - the statue of the lion-headed eagle and the lion. The lion-headed eagle is one of the iconic buildings in Perugia, while the lion is a symbol of the Pope's party. In the religious struggles of the Middle Ages, the power of the Pope often oppressed the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
