Introduction

The San Domenico Maggiore church stands tall on the square in the ancient city of Naples and is a historic religious building. In the center of the square stands an obelisk, topped with a statue of Saint Dominic, the founder of the Dominican Order. The monument was erected in 1656 after a plague and completed by the first Bourbon king of Naples, Charles III, in 1737. The church was originally a small chapel built in the 10th century and underwent reconstruction from 1283 to 1324. In 1670, it was renovated in the Baroque style, but in the 19th century, it returned to its Gothic roots. The attached monastery of the San Domenico Maggiore church was once the location of the University of Naples and also where Thomas Aquinas, the Dominican friar, delivered lectures in 1272.
