Introduction
The Column of Marcus Aurelius, located in the Column Square of Rome, was built in memory of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. It was inspired by Trajan's Column. The column is 41.95 meters high and composed of 28 pieces of Carrara marble, each of which is 3.7 meters high. There are spiral reliefs on the column, which allow light to penetrate and illuminate the interior staircase.
The spiral pattern on the exterior of the column tells the story of Emperor Marcus Aurelius' war against the Marcomanni in 166 AD. The lower half of the column depicts two victorious battles, while the lower half describes Rome's defeat of the Marcomanni and the Quadi in 172 and 173 AD, respectively. The upper half depicts Rome's defeat of the Sarmatians in 174 and 175 AD. The base of the column disappears below the horizon line and is 3 meters high. Address Column Piazza Colonna, Roma, Italia
