Chiesa di San Paolo Dentro le Mura, Gothic gem of post-unification Rome

Roma, Via Napoli, 58

Introduction

The church was built between 1873 and 1880 in Gothic style and belongs to the American Episcopal Church. It is the first non-Catholic church built in Rome after the unification of Italy and has three naves. The special feature of the church is that the apse is decorated with scenes from the Book of Revelation using mosaic techniques. Some ancient saints in the mosaic have faces that resemble famous figures from the 19th century, such as St. Andrew with the face of Abraham Lincoln, St. James with the face of Giuseppe Garibaldi, and St. Patrick with the face of Civil War hero General Grant.
