Introduction

This tall marble building is located in the heart of Rome, similar to the Monument to People's Heroes and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall. It was built in 1911 to commemorate Italy's unification and King Emmanuel II, who helped bring about the unification. The front of the memorial is formed by 16 columns creating a curved facade, with two huge bronze statues representing "Thought" on the right and "Action" on the left. Michelangelo's flying lion sculpture is engraved on the second step leading to the memorial terrace. There are two sets of fountains below - the one on the right symbolizes the Tyrrhenian Sea and the one on the left symbolizes the Adriatic Sea. The central equestrian statue is of Victor Emmanuel II.
