Introduction

The People's Square is located at the intersection of three major roads and is paved with gravel. The stone gate on the north side of the square was used by ancient Romans as a gateway to the Flaminian Way, which led to Rome's entrance. In 1562, according to the Pope's instructions, Michelangelo redesigned and renamed it Porta del Popolo. Before the railway era, travelers arriving in Rome would first admire the view of Porta del Popolo. In the center of the square stands a granite Egyptian obelisk, which was previously used as a decoration in the Maximus Circus and was transported here by Emperor Augustus after conquering Egypt. The exterior of the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo, located on the north side of the People's Square, is ordinary, but it houses a large number of valuable artworks inside.
