Naval Museum Madrid, Discover Spain's Maritime Supremacy and History

Paseo del Prado, 5, 28014 Madrid

Introduction

One of the earliest surviving world maps in the world, the "Universal Chart," is kept in this museum. It was drawn by Juan de la Cosa, an officer on Christopher Columbus's ship, around 1500 and includes the North American continent. Unfortunately, the museum has few visitors. The map is just one of the treasures in the opulent imperial display room, which contains various documents and looted treasures. There are also artifacts such as clothing and weapons from Spain's three centuries of world domination, a giant gun carved from a single tree trunk in Colombia, ship models, and a one-to-one replica of the luxurious headquarters of the commander of the Spanish Armada.
