Introduction

El Escorial is a magnificent granite building that combines monastery, church, palace and mausoleum, built by order of Philip II. The building is enclosed by numerous corridors and rooms, forming a rectangular area with four turrets at each corner. The central church has a dome 92 meters high, adorned with paintings, and the monastery has 43 altars and a small chapel. The courtyard of the Kings is a solemn and imposing square, with no trace of palace luxury, and the walls are empty. This building is grand and breathtaking.
