Introduction

The Marmara Sea is located within Turkey and is part of the border between the Asian and European plates of Turkey. It is connected to the northeast to the Bosphorus strait and to the southwest to the Dardanelles strait. It is the only passage that connects the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The sea has an area of about 11,350 square kilometers, an average depth of 494 meters, and an average salinity of 22. There are the Kizil Islands and the Marmara Islands in the sea, but earthquakes are frequent. Since ancient times, there has been a thriving industry of mining marble, granite, and slate, as well as agriculture and tourism in some coastal towns.
