Introduction

The Church of Chora Monastery, also known as Kariye Museum, is a famous Byzantine relic dating back to the 5th century. During the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. The mosaics inside the church depict the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, showcasing the vitality and artistic achievements of Byzantine art. Despite being covered in dust for centuries, the artworks still exude a great artistic charm. Although the Kariye Museum is not located in a typical tourist area, it is a must-visit attraction. Similar to Istanbul's Christian churches, the Church of Chora Monastery has a long history. During the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. However, fortunately, under the protection of its patrons, the mosaics were not excavated or destroyed, but rather covered with plaster. Visiting this museum is like reading the Bible, as every space - from the walls to the arches - tells the story of the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Miracles of Jesus, the Blessings of Jesus, the Birth and Death of the Virgin Mary, and the messengers of the Saints, leaving one in awe.
