Introduction

This monument is one of the oldest and most prestigious buildings of Istanbul. It was built in 330 AD to celebrate Constantinople becoming the capital of the Roman Empire by Emperor Constantine the Great. Located in Constantinople Square, the monument originally had a statue of Emperor Constantine on top. Unfortunately, the statue was stolen in 1106 and the monument was damaged in a fire in 1779.
