Introduction

The Constantinople Hippodrome was an ancient Roman arena, also known as the "Horse Square" (Atmeydan), and was once the center for sports and social activities in the Byzantine capital of Constantinople. In ancient times, horse racing and chariot races were popular leisure activities, so hippodromes were common sights. Today, only a small part of the Constantinople Hippodrome remains, located in the Sultan Ahmed Square in the old city center of Istanbul, Turkey.
