Introduction

The Oresund Strait, also known as the "Sound Strait", is a waterway linking the Baltic Sea and the Kattegat Strait. It is located between southern Sweden and the western island of Denmark at 12 degrees 40 minutes east longitude and 55 degrees 50 minutes north latitude. The strait is 110 kilometers long and varies in width between 4-28 kilometers, with a depth between 12-28 meters making it the deepest channel in the Baltic Sea. This strait is divided into the eastern and western parts by the Swedish island of Saltholm. Copenhagen and Malmo are important coastal ports along the strait.
