Introduction

St. John's Church, located in the center of Bergen, was built between 1891 and 1894. It went through a design competition and had the participation of multiple architects. This neo-gothic church is one of the largest churches in Bergen, with a capacity of 1250 people and often hosts organ concerts. The ceiling murals in the church were started in 1924 and completed a few years later by Hugo Lous Mohr. The church's organ was manufactured by Schlag and Söhne from Stuttgart, Germany, and was updated by J.H. Jørgensen in 1967. The church tower is 61 meters high, making it the tallest building in Bergen, and was designed by Verein Bochum from Bochum in the Westphalia region. The altar, designed by Marcus Grønvold, depicts a scene of Jesus praying. From 1894 to 2002, this church was the St. John Parish Church in central Bergen, and after 2002, it merged into the Bergen Diocese consisting of five churches.
