Introduction

The construction of St. Mary's Church began in 1130-1140 and was completed around 1180. It is one of the three medieval churches in Bergen and one of the oldest surviving buildings. Throughout history, St. Mary's Church was damaged twice by fire and was subsequently repaired, resulting in some changes to its architectural style. The church has two towers and is built in the Romanesque style with three naves using soapstone as its main material. The oldest part of the church is made of high-grade soapstone and is decorated with sporadic shale. Inside the church, there is a unique pulpit and one of the most beautiful altar decorations in Norway.
