Introduction
At the entrance to the west side of Dubrovnik's old town stands a fortress called Lovrijenac, which towers 37 meters high like a soldier, guarding both entrances to the city from land and sea. In the 11th century, the Venetians attempted to establish a fortress in the same location to control Dubrovnik, but the locals courageously defended their own territory. The Ragusan chronicle details how the fortress was built by the locals in just three months, continuously strengthened their defenses. When the Venetians arrived by ship with all the materials to build their fortress, they were forced to leave empty-handed. The fortress walls facing the sea are 12 meters thick, while the side facing the city is only 60 centimeters thick. The gate of the fortress is engraved in the local language with the phrase "with any wealth, freedom cannot be bought." Address Ul od Tabakarije 29, 20000 Dubrovnik
