Havis Amanda, Symbol of Helsinki: A Tribute to Tradition
City centre market square
3.5
Introduction
This statue was originally completed in Paris in 1906 and transported to Helsinki in 1908 where it was placed in its current location. The creator of the statue, Ville Vallgren, designed a young girl image emerging from the sea, symbolizing the origins of Helsinki. The simple statue holds great meaning for locals. Every May 1st, high school graduates in Helsinki clean the statue and place a white graduation cap on it, symbolizing their transition into adulthood. The entire celebration is very festive and elaborate, and is a traditional Finnish festival that should not be missed. Address City centre market square
