Introduction

Rouen Cathedral was built between the 12th and 16th centuries and is a precious witness to the development and changes of Gothic art. Its façade features three large doors and a series of small spires, with two towers in different styles. The tower on the right is called "Tour de Beurre" because it was built with the revenue from a butter consumption tax during Lent. The tower in the middle was fitted with a 151-meter cast-iron spire in the 19th century, making it the tallest spire in France. The various side chapels inside the cathedral, especially the Chapel of the Virgin, are also worth seeing. They house exquisite tomb sculptures from the 13th and 14th centuries, including tombs of kings, Richard the Lionheart, and Cardinal d'Amboise.
