Introduction

The elites of the French literary and artistic community, including realist writer Maupassant, poet Baudelaire, mathematician Poincaré, automobile engineer Citroën, existentialist writer Sartre, his companion Beauvoir, sociologist Touraine, New Wave director and writer Duras, are all buried in Montparnasse Cemetery. In addition, the cemetery is also a place to commemorate Parisian police officers and firefighters who died in the line of duty.
