Introduction

The church in Les Invalides is the location of Napoleon's tomb. It is part of Les Invalides. Napoleon's coffin was moved to directly beneath the dome of the church on April 2, 1861, and placed on the ground floor for visitors to view from the circular gallery on the second floor. The tombs of Napoleon's other relatives and other generals are also located here. Napoleon's coffin is made of red quartzite and sits on a green granite pedestal. The walls of the surrounding ambulatory of the church are adorned with 12 relief sculptures of the goddess of victory, each representing a glorious battle.
