Introduction

The Statue of Liberty is a giant neoclassical sculpture located in Manhattan, New York Harbor. It was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and unveiled on October 28, 1886, as a gift from France to the United States. The statue primarily depicts a female figure in a robe, symbolizing the mythical figure of liberty. She holds a torch in her right hand and carries a book with the signing date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, in her left hand. She also has broken chains at her feet. The Statue of Liberty represents freedom and is a symbol of the United States, as well as a welcoming symbol for immigrants.
