Introduction

The side of the Naval Department building faces "Decemberists' Square", which is named in honor of the uprising against Tsarist autocracy that took place here in 1825. On the square stands a historical art treasure, the bronze statue of Peter the Great on horseback, also known as the "Bronze Horseman", which was highly praised by the great Russian poet Pushkin. This masterpiece of art was created by the famous sculptor Falconet and is erected on a huge stone, depicting a lifelike scene of Peter the Great riding on a horse. The horse's front legs are in mid-air, while Peter the Great sits on the horse, with a piercing gaze looking straight ahead.
