Introduction

The Summer Garden in Saint Petersburg is one of the oldest and most symmetrical gardens in Russia, built in 1704 by the order of Peter the Great. Originally intended to be a beautiful fountain garden more spectacular than the Palace of Versailles, this idea was eventually realized in the Summer Palace of Peterhof. Initially, the Summer Garden was a royal summer residence and visitors could only enter by invitation from Peter the Great. Today, the Summer Garden has become one of the most charming places in Saint Petersburg. At the main entrance, there is a large pond where beautiful swans are kept during the summer and autumn. Along the avenue behind the pond, there are numerous statues, which are replicas of surviving statues but still add beauty to the Summer Garden. As the first palace in Saint Petersburg, the Summer Palace is located in the northeast corner of the Summer Garden. On the other side of the canal next to the Summer Garden is the Square of the Arts, where there is an eternal flame to commemorate the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for Saint Petersburg during the 1917 revolution and subsequent civil war.
