Introduction

Saint Isaac's Cathedral, located in St. Petersburg, was built in 1818 and took 40 years to complete. It stands at a height of 101.5 meters and covers an area of over 4,000 square meters. The cathedral, originally made of wood, was first built in 1707 and the current Saint Isaac's Cathedral is the fourth reconstruction. In 1818, Tsar Peter I organized a design competition, which was eventually won by French architect Montferrand. Montferrand used solid brick and stone construction to ensure the stability of the cathedral and protect it from rain damage. Later, Tsar Nicholas I introduced more luxurious designs, which caused delays in the project and extended the construction period by five years. The stone used in the cathedral was transported from a nearby quarry in Viborg (which was then part of Finland). For this purpose, special ships and trains were operated. Visitors can purchase tickets to climb the dome and enjoy a panoramic view of St. Petersburg. If the weather is clear, the view is particularly beautiful. It is recommended to visit the Winter Palace first and then walk south to the cathedral, where you can see its domes at the Palace Square.
