Introduction
Cathedral Square is the main square of the Moscow Kremlin and one of the oldest squares in Moscow. It is named after the three cathedrals facing the square—the Assumption Cathedral, the Archangel Cathedral, and the Annunciation Cathedral—and is often used for coronations, funerals and processions of Russian tsars, archbishops, and Moscow grand dukes. Even today, the presidential inauguration ceremony of Russia is held here.
In the 21st century, Cathedral Square has restored the traditional changing of the guard ceremony and occasionally hosts opera performances in the ancient cathedrals.
The square is surrounded by many famous ancient Russian buildings, which include, from the lower left corner counterclockwise: the Annunciation Cathedral (also known as the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Cathedral or the Angel's Annunciation Cathedral), the Archangel Cathedral, the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the Church of the Twelve Apostles, the Assumption Cathedral, and the Church of the Deposition of the Robe of the Mother of God.
