Porta Nigra, A Monumental Legacy of Ancient Rome

Very ancient city gate

Porta Nigra - one of the ancient Roman ruins in Trier, also known as the Black Gate, is the iconic building of the city. As a Roman gate from the ancient Roman era, Porta Nigra preserves its complete architectural structure and design, making it one of the most intact Roman gates in the northern Alps. In 1986, Porta Nigra, along with other Roman ruins in Trier and the cathedral, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
