Introduction

Heidelberg University was founded in 1386 and is one of the oldest universities in Germany, as well as the third oldest university in Europe. It has 18 faculties including theology, law, medicine, and philosophy, and attracts 32,000 students from over 80 countries. Mark Twain wrote in his novel "A Tramp Abroad" in 1880 that the atmosphere of studying here was very rigorous, despite the presence of some boisterous students and drunkards.
