Introduction

The Old Bridge is a historic bridge located over the Neckar River in the Heidelberg area. It was built in 1788 and officially named Karl-Theodor Bridge after the elector at that time. It is the ninth bridge at this location and the oldest bridge on the Neckar River. Most of the time, only pedestrians are allowed to cross the bridge, offering a panoramic view of the castle. The sculptures on the bridge depict Elector Karl-Theodor at the southern end and the goddess of wisdom at the northern end, symbolizing the elector's support for art and science. At the southern end of the bridge, there are bridge gates, two 28-meter-high round towers dating back to the 15th century, which are the oldest parts of the Old Bridge and were originally used to collect tolls.
