Introduction
The Belfry on the Market Square in Bruges was constructed in the 13th to 15th centuries and has become an important cultural heritage site in the world. The tower symbolizes values associated with freedom and power. The entire belfry stands at 88 meters tall and has 366 steps (wooden stairs at the top) that spiral up. Timekeeping was the tower's earliest function. The bells of the belfry were also used to alert citizens of important events and emergencies in the town. Every 15 minutes, the belfry chimes with a beautiful sound, making it a renowned attraction in Europe. The belfry is made up of 47 historic bells.
From the top of the belfry, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city. The belfry has been an integral part of Bruges, influencing the medieval city's way of life.
