Introduction

Halfpenny Bridge, also known as Wellington Bridge, was built to commemorate General Wellington's victory over Napoleon. It spans the River Liffey and is part of Dublin's skyline, as well as one of the city's landmarks. The bridge is located south of the famous Temple Bar district. It was officially opened in 1816 and was the only pedestrian bridge across the River Liffey in Dublin at that time. Originally, pedestrians had to pay a halfpenny toll to cross the bridge, hence its name "Halfpenny Bridge".
