Introduction

The Dongshan River is the fifth largest river in Yilan, flowing through the towns of Luodong, Dongshan, and Wujie, with a total length of 24 kilometers. The river has been planned as a multi-functional sports, leisure, and recreational area, divided into three water areas, each showcasing different recreational features, aiming to become an "outdoor water-themed museum". The most important recreational area is the Dongshan River Waterfront Park, which rebuilds the natural relationship between people and water, using natural landscapes as the design concept and incorporating local features of Yilan, such as the water stage, five conical pebble mounds, and Turtle Mountain Island on the coast, inadvertently bringing Yilan's landmarks into the park. As the Dongshan River has been rumored to be protected by a Qinglong (blue dragon) and a Huanglong (yellow dragon) since ancient times, the park's riverbank is built with pebbles, creating a beautiful and curving dragon slope, with green, blue, yellow, and orange pottery pieces embedded on the steps, as well as interesting decorative patterns made by Yilan's children. Today, Yilan's annual Dragon Boat Festival, International Rowing Invitational Tournament, and International Children's Games Festival are all held in the Waterfront Park. Even a magpie bridge is set up on Chinese Valentine's Day, adding a romantic atmosphere. In recent years, the Waterfront Park has become one of the most popular tourist spots in Taiwan.
