Introduction

Turtle Island is located about 10 kilometers east of Toucheng Township in Yilan County, Taiwan. It is the only active volcano in Taiwan and the largest island in Yilan County. Its shape resembles a floating turtle, hence its name. Turtle Island can be divided into three parts: Turtle Head, Turtle Shell, and Turtle Tail, mainly composed of andesite and volcanic debris. After the lifting of martial law in 1988, the government designated Turtle Island as part of the Northeast Coast National Scenic Area in 1999, and it was planned as a sea ecological park with both intellectual and emotional appeal. Turtle Lake, which was once introduced with seawater by residents to become a fishing port, has been repeatedly destroyed by typhoons and is now a brackish lake. Turtle Tail is located at the end of Turtle Island and is a pebble beach. Due to the influence of monsoons and tides, Turtle Tail Beach moves south and north, earning it the nickname "swinging tail of the divine turtle". Turtle Island also has a rare underwater world where thousands of crabs live in the environment of strong acid and sulfur. In addition, from the military barracks on Turtle Island, you can enjoy the steep, verdant mountains and clear ridge lines, resembling a beautiful lady looking up to the sky, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of nature.
