Introduction
The Shengping Theater was originally built in 1914 as a wooden stage. In 1934, locals decided to rebuild it at its current site at the intersection of Shuzaki Road and Light Rail Road. The new two-story Shengping Theater had a stone first floor and a wooden second floor, with about 600 seats in total. The name "Shengping" means "harmony and peace through song and dance," while "theater" refers to a performance venue. In 1951, following Taiwan’s recovery, the theater was renamed the Shengping Theater. During Jiufen's golden age, it was very busy on weekends, with performances of opera, movies, puppet shows, and more. It was always full, with thousands of nearby residents coming to watch shows.
In 1961, the Shengping Theater was renovated, with upgraded materials and equipment. The wooden frame of the roof and the walls of the second floor were improved. However, due to the decline of mining and population movement, the theater closed in 1986.
Because many famous Taiwanese movies were filmed there, the Shengping Theater became a famous landmark in Jiufen. With its nostalgic posters on the walls outside, it became a favorite photo spot for tourists. In August 2011, the theater reopened for tourists to visit. The vintage ticket booth, old movie posters, sales department, and exhibits inside the theater make people feel as if they have returned to the Shengping Theater of the 1960s.
