Four four South Village, A Tranquil Enclave Amidst Urban Bustle

No. 50, Songqin Street, Xinyi District, Taipei City
4.2

Introduction

Four Four South Village is the first military dependents' village in Taipei, located not far from the Xinyi commercial district. In 1948, employees and their families from the Qingdao Arsenal's 44th Factory hastily relocated to Taipei, and this location became their settlement. Because it is located south of the 44th Factory, locals referred to it as "Four Four South Village". Today, only a small part of Four Four South Village's buildings remain, most of which are unauthorized structures hastily built without aesthetic appeal. However, the preservation of Four Four South Village is controversial, as it focuses on preserving old houses to showcase the memories of ordinary people during that era and to respect individual experiences. This idea has received strong support from the cultural community. The current Four Four South Village is called the Xinyi Civic Center, serving as a place for showcasing art and cultural works, as well as hosting creative markets. The Xinyi Civic Center includes special exhibition halls, a village exhibition hall, a performance hall, a community hall, Four Four Square, and a cultural park. Additionally, more and more people come here to enjoy leisure time.
