Introduction

Oniishi Bouzu Jigoku is one of the famous eight hells in Beppu Hell Tour. The other seven hells are: Sea Hell, Mountain Hell, Cooking Pot Hell, Shaven Monk’s Head Hell, White Pond Hell, Bloody Pond Hell and Tornado Hell. This hell is named after "Bouzu" because the hot mud in the spring presents a gray ball-like boiling that resembles a monk's head. Oniishi was the name of the original owner of the hell, hence it is called Oniishi Bouzu Jigoku. The water temperature is approximately 99 degrees Celsius. This hell was once closed but reopened in 2002 and joined the Beppu Hell Tour Association.
