Introduction

The Old Bridge of Mostar is a 16th-century bridge that spans the Neretva River in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993, but a reconstruction project was launched soon after and reopened in 2004. The bridge is a 29-meter long, 4-meter wide arch bridge with two stone towers on each side. The arch was built with local stone and its current shape is slightly different from the original due to irregular deformation of the inner arch. The piers and wings are made of limestone and connected to the riverbank and cliffs. Prior to the war, the Old Bridge of Mostar was the place where young men would hold annual diving competitions to attract the attention of local girls. Nine young men jumped from the bridge to celebrate its reopening in 2004.
