Introduction

Hulhumalé is located on the north side of Hulhulé Island, built to relieve the burden of Malé Island. The island has an area of approximately 1.8 square kilometers and its outlines are artificially constructed rectangular shapes made of coral and sand. A 1-kilometer-wide and 2-kilometer-long road has been built on the south side, connecting it to Hulhulé Island. Construction began in 1997 and has completed about one seventh as of now. The north has begun to take shape, with facilities such as residential areas, schools, pharmacies, shops, and mosques. By 2020, it is expected to accommodate 50,000 residents. Hulhumalé focuses on planning and design, avoiding the disordered expansion on Malé Island. Walking here, you can feel the atmosphere of a slowly forming tropical capital.
