Introduction

The Bodhi Temple was built on top of a Bodhi tree, without tall buildings, and the trees remain lush, witnessing the worship of believers from all directions for thousands of years. Every morning, believers gather here from all over the country until dusk. In 247 BC, the son of the Indian emperor Ashoka propagated Buddhism to Sri Lanka. When King Devanampiya Tissa converted to Buddhism, he requested to transplant the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment to Sri Lanka. Thus, a bhikkhuni named Sanghamitta brought a sapling from the Bodh Gaya in India and planted it in the garden of the Anuradhapura Bodhi Temple. Today, the Sri Lankan Bodhi tree has grown into its sixth generation. Although its ancestors have not been there for thousands of years, it still stands resolutely in the Bodhi Temple. Buddhism has deeply rooted in Sri Lanka, showing the same strength and eternity as this Bodhi tree to the world.
