Introduction
The New City Gate, also known as the main city gate, is a spectacular gate in the northern part of the old city of Galle, separating the new city from the old city. The gate was opened by the British in 1873 and was used to control traffic in and out of the old city, making it the newest section of the city wall. As Galle faces the sea in most areas, the gate is of great importance for the security of the landward defences. Originally, the Portuguese built a moat around the gate, and later on in 1667, the Dutch further elongated the moat, dividing the wall into three parts: the Star Bastion, the Moon Bastion, and the Sun Bastion. Near the Moon Bastion is another iconic building - the clock tower of Galle Fort. The clock tower rises above the city wall and is still in use today, being accurate and reliable. The flag-raising ceremony is held here every morning, which is simple and solemn, making it a great shooting subject.
