Introduction

The old city gate in Galle is a historical relic located in the northeast of the old town. It may appear worn-out, but it still stirs up people's yearning and imagination for ancient city walls. On both sides of the gate, there are storage houses of the fortress, which are Mediterranean-style buildings painted in bright yellow. The gate is adorned with the inscription "VOC" (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) in Dutch, which stands for the Dutch East India Company. However, as the new era arrived, the British colonizers took over Galle, and in 1873, a modern new gate was built to accommodate the growing popularity of cars at that time.
