Introduction

The main shrine of Izumo Taisha is built on a hill and located inside a cliff cave along the Pacific coast. The shrine faces the Nankai coast and has several gateways. Most importantly, it enshrines the ancestral god of the Japanese people. According to legend, the father of the first Emperor of Japan was born here, making it one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
