Introduction

Wakayama Castle is one of Japan's three major flatland castles, along with Matsumoto Castle and Himeji Castle. It was once the residence of the Kii branch of the Tokugawa family, who ruled the Kii Province (also known as Kishu Province or Wakayama Province). Despite being designated as a national treasure, Wakayama Castle was burnt down during the bombing by the American forces in World War II. The present-day Wakayama Castle was reconstructed in 1958, thanks to the funding provided by Suginochihachi Kanemitsu, who was born in Wakayama Prefecture.
