Introduction

There is a business district in southern Kyushu, centered around Tenmonkan, which locals affectionately call "Tenjō". The district was once home to the Tenmonkan observatory, built by Satsuma feudal lord Shimazu Shigeharu in 1779. Although the observatory no longer exists, its name lives on to this day. Tenmonkan is the largest shopping, entertainment, and commercial district in Kagoshima prefecture, with streets lined with unique local restaurants, stores, and fashion shops under its arch-shaped roof. It has become the trendiest gathering spot in southern Kyushu.
