Shofukuji Temple is located near Dazaifu in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is the oldest Zen temple of the Rinzai school of the Myoshinji branch. Established in 1195 by Zen Master Shokei, it received support from the military leader Seven-ki of the Gen clan. The surroundings are tranquil, with other temples such as Shotenji and Tochoji nearby. A plaque at the entrance of the temple reads "The Earliest Zen Cave in Japan," indicating its significance as the origin of Zen Buddhism in Japan. It is said to have been bestowed by Emperor Horikawa. The temple grounds are spacious, including the main gate, Buddha hall, main hall, and bell tower, among other historical relics.
