Introduction

In Japan, Himuro Shrine is one of the rare shrines dedicated to the god of ice. The shrine was established on the upper stream of Yoshiki River, and in 710, during the relocation of the capital to Heijō-kyō, an ice pond and ice house were built for ice storage. It is said that since then, the stored ice is used for the annual winter ritual to pray for a year of good weather and bountiful harvest.
