Hassan Tower, A Monumental Legacy of Almohad Dynasty
Boulevard Mohamed Lyazidi, Rabat
4.2
Introduction
Hassan Tower is located in the Moroccan capital of Rabat, built in 1195 during the reign of the Almohad dynasty and designed by Jabir ibn Aflah. Its architectural style is similar to the Giralda tower of the Seville Cathedral in Spain, hence its nickname, "sister tower". It is said that both towers were inspired by the Kutubiyya Mosque, also located in Morocco.
Initially planned as the minaret of a grand mosque, Hassan Tower was intended to be 86 meters tall and the tallest in the world. However, after Sultan Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur's death in 1199, the construction was halted. Currently, Hassan Tower stands at a height of 44 meters, only half of its intended height. The other parts of the mosque were not completed, with only 200 columns and a few walls built.
Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammad V face each other, making them one of Rabat's famous tourist attractions. They are both valuable legacies of Moroccan history and culture, attracting many visitors to appreciate the magnificence and historical value of these buildings.
