Introduction

Eng: Jikkoin Temple is a nunnery established by Prince Shotoku in 594 AD. In the 12th century, a woman from the Taira clan married into the imperial family and became the empress of Emperor Gotoba. However, during the Genpei War in 1185, the Taira clan was wiped out and she was forced to jump into the sea with her 2-year-old son, Emperor Antoku. Although she was rescued, her son tragically died. She then became a nun and spent her later years in seclusion at Jikkoin Temple.
