Introduction

The establishment of Kamigamo Shrine is not accurately known, but after the relocation of the capital to Kyoto during the Heian period, it became a revered shrine of the imperial court. The shrine consists of a main hall and a worship hall (designated as a national treasure) in the architectural style of the Heian period, as well as 34 designated cultural properties. As the ancestral shrine of the powerful clan Kamono, Kamigamo Shrine, together with Shimogamo Shrine (Kamomioya Shrine), is collectively known as the Kamono Shrine and enjoys wide renown. The shrine grounds are adorned with the clear waters of the Nakanokawa Stream, towering ancient trees, and exude a mysterious and ancient atmosphere. The long corridors are flanked by standing sand mounds, representing sacred land, adding to the shrine's deep historical significance.
