Introduction

Mount Hiei, also known as Hieizan, Kitayama, and Tendai-san, is a mountain in the northeastern corner of Kyoto, Japan. It consists of two peaks, Daihiei-dake and Shime-dake, with the highest point located in the neighboring city of Otsu, Shiga Prefecture. Since ancient times, Mount Hiei has been regarded as a sacred mountain protecting the capital. It is home to Enryaku-ji Temple and Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine, both of which have a long history and thriving religious practices, making it a popular pilgrimage destination. In particular, Enryaku-ji Temple is the head temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, and Mount Hiei is often synonymous with the temple. In 1994, UNESCO designated Enryaku-ji Temple as a World Heritage Site.
